Squared

It’s like a disease really. I can’t stop thinking about squares. Which is kind of funny because Ann and I are always having the discussion about how we’re not really square people. (Knitting wise – not personality wise. If it’s a personality thing well I’m so square I’m a freaking circle.) Whenever there’s a call out for blanket squares or what not – we’d rather send money. It’s a selfish thing admittedly and if that makes you shake your head and run the other way that’s okay, but that’s who I am. Even if it wasn’t on the quiz. Anyway – here I am OBSESSED with squares. I finished another one last night:

And here are my two squares together:

Oh my GOD I can’t stand how excited I am about this!!! I’ve already added another series of squares because I can’t believe I forgot the TRADITIONAL log cabin layout. I was going through The Bible again last night and realized it was absolutely NECESSARY to the blanket.

Do you think it’s bad if the blanket itself is not square-ish but rectangular? Ann wanted to know how I live with myself with these obsessions rolling around in my head and I told her it’s not easy being green me. (Sorry, couldn’t help myself!) But seriously, what do you think? Part of me thinks there NEEDS to be three of each square and that I can’t leave out any of the pattern combinations – but another part of me is like it should be SQUARE! Blankets can be rectangular right? And a square IS a rectangle right?

I ordered more yarn from Tina but I have to say I’m EXTREMELY pleased with how the yarn is knitting up and how far it’s going.

There you see the Beryl ball (dark green) compared to the Jade ball. Having completed the square that is pretty much all Beryl I still have a decent amount left. The heavyweight skeins are 350 yds. and I’m definitely satisfied. I think I can get at least a couple more squares out of the Beryl – especially if I do the ones that don’t have as much Beryl in them. Maybe even four then. I’m taking these squares with me on vacation tomorrow (and a sock or two) and I can’t wait to see what I come back with! Two down – ten more to go!!! WHO KNEW garter stitch could be so much fun!?

On to more serious stuff: CONGRATULATIONS!

CECE and STEPH

They won the Mnemonic contest. Cece was the random winner. Her entry was: Xylophonists aways carry various mallets. Which is actually quite true. And Steph’s entry was: Can Victor Xerox my ass? I don’t know why but this just totally cracks me up! There were other a bunch of other xerox my ass jokes, but for some reason this was it for me. Georgie laughed too, so that’s a two thumbs up! Thanks everyone for playing! You were great!

And in case you didn’t win that one – here’s ANOTHER CONTEST for you!
When I was over at Kay’s the other day and I was telling her about the contest I had for the book and how the winners were so happy she said HEY! GIVE AWAY ANOTHER ONE! So I am.

Check this out! It’s the MDK PEACHES & CREME 12 PACK!

Fiesta Ombre/Peacock
Sunburst/Teal Ombre
Lemon-Lime/ Apple Green
Light Green /Pink Lemonade
Daisy Ombre/ Faded Denim
White/Shaded Denim

Apparently, Peaches & Creme comes in 4 Packs – but they’re all the same – they don’t mix up colors in the packs. So Ann and Kay suggested to them that they might want to put together a package of various colors that appear in the book – and there you have the MDK 12 Pack. (To get your own t12 pack, assuming you don’t win here, you can call the good people at Peaches & Creme and ASK FOR IT! YAY!)

Okay. How do you win the MDK book and 12 Pack? (By the way – the book is NOT SIGNED!) It’s easy! Here is a link to the Peaches & Creme colorways. Now I want you to make up your own! THE NAME HAS TO HAVE OMBRE in it because I think that is just so silly. What’s an ombre? So come up with your own colorway – end it in ombre and DESCRIBE THE COLORS! Leave the answers in the comments and I’ll pick my favorite ten – then I’ll consult with Ann and Kay, Peaches & Creme connoisseurs, to pick a winner. I’m off on vacation until Wednesday, so I’ll keep the comments open until 11:59 PM EST on 5/17/06. BE CREATIVE AND HAVE FUN! (One entry per person please.)

I’m not sure how much I’ll be blogging while I’m away, but I’m hoping to come back with an I and a J! AND I will have SUPER HUGE NEWS ABOUT THE SPIN OUT! Have a great weekend!

Comments

  1. leather brown, montana big-sky blue, dust grey-brown, and a bit of cream straw hat…
    “Saddle Up, (h)Ombre”
    Heehee. 🙂

  2. Or pooh-inspired faded tan, blues, and yellows, with tigger orange and eyore purple, with a lot of honey…
“Today is a Day to Play Ombre”
I need to stop now. Ahem.

  3. Shattered eggshell, yolk yellow, and gritty floor gray…
    “Oops, [H]ombre!”

  4. not a contest entry —
you might be interested in Gwen Marston’s books, “Twenty Little Log Cabin Quilts,” and “Liberated Quilting,” particularly the latter. She does neat things with log cabin design. You might also scan quilt books at your local quilt store; you’ll quickly see which ones have real color and design sense.

  5. Ocean Tide Ombre; Kiwi green, Light Ocean Blue, and Navy Blue

  6. Tart Ombre
    Raspberry-Ivory-beige

  7. I think the blanket will look just fine as a rectangle. Better than a square, because there will be more of those gorgeous greens to look at.
As for a Peaches and Creme color, how about Happy Pills Ombre? Prozac green and white with Xanax blue. OK, that’s a really dumb one, but I don’t have anything else. Oh, well. Have a great vacation!

  8. Rainy Day Ombre-
Muddy brown, Thundercloud gray, and No-sun sky blue

  9. Gardners Ombre
Imagine looking at a garden and pulling out the colours in the different areas. The black eyed susans, the sunflowers, the delphiniums, several colours all gorgeous.

  10. I prefer rectangular blankets to square, myself! Especially if it’s going to be a baby blanket (which I think you mentioned the other day). Gives them more “growing” room. And rectangular fits better into carseats, strollers, pack ‘n plays, etc.
Peaches & Creme: a deep dusty blue, a slightly lighter dusty blue, dusky gray, & charcoal gray: So somber, it must be called SOMBRE!

  11. Squares leave your toes cold, unless you’re wearing some of those many Jaywalkers to bed. Knit a rectangular blanket, I say.
I vote for a tangerine and powder blue P&C colorway that we’ll call Dumb & D’Ombre. (Don’t ask me what possessed me to watch that movie…crochet fried my brain. But really, I think orange and blue warshrags would be pretty great.)
P.S. I’m pretty sure ombre is French for “shadow”.

  12. Brass Band Timbre Ombre:
Bronze, Copper, Brass and Gold (all various yellowy/browny/metallic colors)
    Jen

  13. I think a rectangle will be excellent. Besides, humans aren’t square are they? Basically, they’re rectangular.
Well, three players, so that makes three colours. I call hearts as the trump suit, so that makes red one of the colours. Alexander POPE wrote a parady “epic poem” about it, and the pope wears white, a parody on of white would be beige so beige is another colour. It originated in Spain, but since I’ve already used red they get yellow. It does remind me of my summer holidays…
I shall call it “Trump this Ombre” in a warm loving red, a parody on pious white and a sunny welcoming yellow and dedicate it to my summer holiday which trumped all others.

  14. For what it’s worth, I agree that wrecked-angles are the way to go.
All that P&C stuff is just too cheerful. I’d like to a see a Junk Yard Ombre: Rusty brown, moldy green, seagull poo white (why do seagulls go to junk yards?) and a smoldering ashy grey. That would be cool 🙂

  15. Peacock and White, with just a little bit of Yellow – Smurf Ombre.

  16. Retangular blankets are just fine. Ever sit in a chair with your feet on the ottoman and have way too much blanket all over the place?? The retangular blanket will be “just right”.

  17. I just finished knitting a blanket that was made up of 35 squares. The final layout was 7×5 so it is definitely a rectangle. The seaming is making me nuts but it will be worth it in the end!

  18. How fun!
Desert Sunset — Desert Bloom — Mountain Shadow — Painted Desert — Desert Sand
    “It’s the Wild West Ombre”

  19. How about
“Not For Your Hombre” (hombre means man in spanish”
    Andale, Andale!!

  20. What my dad always said at the end of the day:
    I am “One Tired Ombre”
Sleepytime colors of deep purple, midnight blue, and grey. Zzzzzzz.

  21. Since I lack the inspiration to invent a name, I’ll chime in about the etymology.
If refering to textiles and yarn, I’m afraid you’ve got the etymology wrong: it’s “ombré” (no relation to the card game nor to the Spanish word “hombre”), it means “shadowy” in French (“ombre” with no accent means “shadow”) and it describes a colourway whose hues vary from the lighter ones to the darker ones:
    cf. Institut Français Textile-Habillement glossary:
    http://www.ifth.org/lexique_fr.asp?lettre=o

  22. How about tortilla chip gold, guacamole green, and salsa mauve–ole’ ombre.

  23. OMBRE in French means shadow…any color that is cast by a shadow is “ombré” therefore another dimension of color….

  24. Squares are rectangles, and rectangles aren’t squares.
But I thought you didn’t like odd numbers?

  25. dancing dark brown, melted cream, tarnishing beige, and glimmering gold make for lovely
    Candle Ombre

  26. Yippee Skippee Ombre
Bright colors – pink, purple, green, & orange
I don’t know why, but Yippee Skippee just seemed to fit with the other names on the list. 🙂

  27. Catchy yet solemn…How about:
    Somber Ombre
A beautiful mix of navy, dark purple midnight blue and black.
Perfect for lace mourning kerchiefs and shawls…or a variety of projects found on the Anti-Craft site 🙂

  28. Stand by your hombre!
    Orange, blue, white!

  29. No Way, Ombre
Red Light red, fishnet stocking black, wild eyeshadow purple, and yet no green from the john!

  30. Not a contest entry. Just catching up on your blog and the MSW stuff, since I’m slow on catching up on my own stuff, too.
In response to your post about being somewhat “over” MSW, I felt the way you felt at the end of last Saturday, and even told my travel buddies on our way to the hotel, “I think I could do it all in one day next time and not stay over ’til Sunday”. I AM SO GLAD I STAYED THROUGH SUNDAY! It was like an entirely different place. The weather was fantastic – a lot cooler and more pleasant, the crowds were alot lighter, there was a pleasant leisurely-ness in the air. You could actually get into the booths and see the merchandise and see the animals trotting by with their owners. It was truly Shangri-la. It was like a whole different festival, and it really made my weekend. I think from now on I may have to come up Saturday afternoon and leave Sunday afternoon.
I loved that typewriter key jewelry — almost bought some. Instead I bought a few other things from her booth. Fun stuff, huh?
Okay, I’ll now end this out-of-context comment! 🙂
    -Mary

  31. Not your mother’s hombre—
pink polka dots, laffy taffy, between the sheets white, and run-your-hands-through-his hair-black
    –in honor or Mother’s Day—

  32. Cherry Limeade Ombre!
not necessarily in a certain order, but a dk pink, lt pink, grass green, lime green
could add some white , but that’s optional. 😀

  33. moody ombre
dark purple, dark blue , black with some grey here and there.
kind of lame i know but thats me.

  34. Darnit! I was going to submit Somber Ombre! 🙂 A funereal mix of blacks and grays when lit by mortuary fluorescents.

  35. How about… Devils & Dust Ombre. A tribute to one of Bruce’s more recent albums, in a combination of red, clay and gray.

  36. Two last ones (if I can’t do multiple entries, you can just use the previous one)…
    Envy Ombre
Muted greens, shot through with bolts of red.
    Humble Ombre
Aw shucks yellows, oranges and honey browns…

  37. Outback Ombre
~ red ochre, sandstone & gumleaf green
    (colours of the Aussie Outback)

  38. Since Ombre is actually a card game, how about Joker Ombre? In my mind, it’s a white base color with a smattering of black, hot reds, and sunny yellows. Kind of a crazy mix, since the Joker is indeed Wild!

  39. Since they have “Shades of Rust,” I’d prefer “Shades of Dust” ombre. After all, I’d have less dust around the house if I didn’t knit so much.

  40. “New Baby Girl Ombre”
baby pink, soft, bright blue (the color of her eyes), pale yellow (like her soft little tufts of hair), and some white (for the spit-up).
    I love being a mom!

  41. Liz in Nowhere PA says

  45. AnnKay Ombré – a superfakeycheerful mix of blues, bright gold, pumpkin orange and toasted marshmallow tan. A perfect match for the cover-art of Mason Dixon Knitting.
Of course, the Real Mason-Dixon Ombré would be Yank Blue & Reb Gray. 🙂

  46. A Very Brady Ombre (or “Groovy Ombre”)
Avocado Green, Burnt Orange, Harvest Gold, and “Paneling Brown” LOL.

  47. Kumquat Ombre
various shades of oranges, a variegated yarn. It sounds delicious.
I can’t wait to see your blanket evolve, it’s stunning!

  48. Kumquat Ombre
various shades of oranges, a variegated yarn. It sounds delicious.
I can’t wait to see your blanket evolve, it’s stunning!

  49. WILD GIRL OMBRE
Sunburst, Rose Pink, Apple green, Light green, Mistletoe, Mar-di-Gras, Peppercorn Ombre

  50. Someone else may already have mentioned this, but quilts don’t have to be square. I don’t think I have ever made a square quilt. Think about the size of a mattress – usually it is longer than it is wider. So no worries about a rectangular blanket.
Now I’m off to think about an hombre – whoops I meant ombre.

  51. 1. Sombrero: warm browns and faded dusty sunset red/orange/violets. After all, you wave your sombrero as you ride into the sunset, don’t you?
    2. Let a smile be your ombrella: crayon colors (red, yellow, blue, green, purple to help you stay cheerful on a rainy day.
    This was fun! Thanks!

  52. Hike Away Ombre
Chocolate and Camel for the color of the Path
Emerald and Light Green to represent the foliage
Baby Blue for the color of the sky.
Perfect to knit a washcloth to wipe away the dirt and sweat after a long hike.

  53. I’m loving the progress of your Log Cabin! I’m a little nervous to try it just yet, but someday…..

  54. there is *no way* you’re reeling me in to this contest. uh-uh. i dig in my heels and refuse to 1) read all of the hilarious names you’ve gotten so far and 2) spend my morning trying to come up with an entry. because it *will* take the whole morning with my cloudy mummy-brain. your log cabin squares are perfect, truly.
you say (h)ombre, i say ombré, let’s call the whole thing off.

  55. Loving the progress of that Log Cabin .. and it’s making me want to do my own! Dern you!
    On to the contest:
Bel Ombre: White sand, ocean blue, tropical green, sunset orange and coral red. The official cotton yarn of the Seychelles!

  56. The Drunken Ombre: A little black, a little blue, some puke pinkish/brown, and some green to represent the giant lizard that was staring at me when I passed out the last night on my Cancun Spring Break.

  57. The Ombre of my Obsession: Cranberry, chocolate, and steel gray.

  58. Ombre (french for shadow) inspires me:
“Ciels et mers de plomb” ombre: (Lead skies and seas shadow): Medium-dark grey to slightly purplish-grey-blue to metallic lead colour with subtle crests of luminous golden yellow and the occasional overtone of orange.
I once saw the sea and the sky in exactly this colour combination: dark, heavy grey tones (the sea looked dark metal), but some sun rays were able to pass through the clouds and the yellow-orange light reflected on the top of the waves! It was so beautiful I wish there would be a yarn colourway exactly like it!

  59. Christina says

    http://www.rock.com.ar/letras/1/1378.shtml

    MOMBRE!

Sky Blue – for his heavenly eyes, Pearly White – for his wonderful smile, Plain ol’ Tan – for his handsome rugged nature

  75. Because my father really wanted to name me Ambra, after a prostitute in Somalia who “took care of him when he was sick” in the Peace Corps (no really!). Ambra, Amber, Ambre…

  88. My Peaches & Cream Ombre Color
Here in Utah County, Utah, live the greatest population per capita of Mormons. We LDS folks love to get together often, and food or refreshment is always included. When so many people gather together so often, the food budget can get pretty high. So we Mormons have come up with many interesting recipes that feed the multitudes yet cost next to nothing. One of these unique dishes has become almost legendary. Yes, I am speaking of the famous Lime Green Jello Salad. Since Mason-Dixon Knitting honors Kay and Ann’s roots and origins, I would like to have a Peaches & Cream colorway named “Utah’s Green Jello Salad Ombre” to commemorate the gorgeous, lovely colors used in making this delicious treat. The yarn would include mostly shades of lime green (duh) in hues from bright lime green to a deep green. Crushed pineapple always goes into the salad, so lets add some pineapple yellow to the yarn. Now that the essentials have been included, we can get creative by adding a bit of white (for cottage cheese), a dab of bright red (for maraschino cherries), and a tiny bit of brown (for nuts). Not everybody likes nuts, so the brown should only be added in very minute amounts.
Now, close your eyes and imagine how impressed your friends will be when, at your next pot luck, you whip up this classic, yummy salad, and present it to your hostess along with a couple of warsh rags that coordinate beautifully with your dish!

  89. Kathleen says

Mermaid Ombre: Deep aquamarine, light sea green, dark kelly green, and flecks of gold
Or, a nod to my 2nd grader: sponge bob ombre: neon yellow, chartreuse and black
What about Ombreoffice – grey (like the filing cabinets) beige (like the walls) and white (like the flurescent lights that threaten to blind me). You could add a little red for steaming office rage, or not.
How fun is this contest!? are you going to send this to Peaches & Cream?

  90. Just a few ombre suggestions…
Cherry B-Ombre: Hot pink, red, black. May only be knitted while listening to chick rock.
D-Ombre Perignon: Bottle green, gold, and crystal sparkle. Once you spend all your money on yarn, this is the closest you’ll get to the real thing!
N-Ombre de Dios: All neon, all the time. Guaranteed to make you blind. Ay!

  91. As a former cartographer (mapmaker) how about mapping ombre? Think deep blues shading to pale ones, and tan shading to medium brown. Add a little cream too.

  92. From a south Florida knitter:
Imagine every color there is outside blowing by at 150 mph:
