Labor Day

should be on or about March 23, 2008.

We’re ecstatic, our families are ecstatic and baby is doing great. I, on the other hand, have puked more in the last two months than I have in 37 years. WHOO HOO!

Have a great Labor Day or Monday, wherever you are!
Thank you!
Love,
C, G & B

  79. Congratulations! I hope the nausea vomitting stop SOON SOON SOON. My little guy is due in early Nov.
There is one thing I am certain of.
When you are worshiping a toilet in the name of motherhood, no one is or ever has been as sick as you are right them. Make sure you are treated as such and ignore anyone who claims they had it worse. They are wrong.
    Good Luck and YEAH!!!!

  122. Mazel tov!

  123. Such wonderful news! I had my first at 37 and just sent him off to college last week. It is so totally worth every puking minute. Anti-nausea writbands(Seabands)worked for me as well as ginger or mint tea. Just remember as you hug the bowl, why you’re getting sick and how wonderful THAT is. Congratulations to the 3 of you!

  156. Mazel Tov!!! Take care of yourself and baby! Yay!!!!!!!

  157. Congratulations!
Whole Foods down here carries some Altoid-like pastilles made from ginger – they REALLY help. I also used to carry thin slices of lemon with me in a little plastic bag (it was a pain to change it every day, but boy did I love it during one of my all-too-frequent nausea attacks). Carry some saltines with you as well.
I had the stupidly named “morning sickness” for my entire pregnancy. I remember sitting in my car in our driveway and I had smelled the gas from the lawnmower and I to use my cell phone to call my husband inside the house to get him to bring me a ginger ale NOW! Five years later, it’s finally a funny story!
Enjoy it, you’re going to have fun!

  158. Congrats! That is great news!

  159. Yay!
Congrats!! I think there is something in the water around here. There is definately another wave of babies due in the blogoshere in the winter and spring(I”m due January 2). Hang in there it will get better in the second trimester and you knitting mojo will come back, I promise.

  160. Congratulations! I was hoping that baby news was the big news for you!

  161. Puking is a very, very good sign, lots of hormones moving around adjusting to the idea of a growing baby. Keep that in mind as you head to the throne for the umpteenth time. Congrats!

  182. Congratulations!
All I could do during my first trimesters was to lay around and watch Food Network, which was interesting since there was so little joy to be had from eating. The worst is almost over. Yes, I said the worst. Being huge and labor notwithstanding (And mine was quite difficult.), that sick, lethargic, tired feeling is the worst part to me.
Oh, and to think of all of the pretty little things you will be able to knit! In a few weeks, I bet you will be cranking them out!

  183. Coming out of the woodwork to wish you all the best and congratulations!

  200. Congratulations! I’m sorry about the morning sickness. I had it pretty bad with my second child. It helps to never have an empty stomach. It seems counter intuitive, but it really does help.

  201. i can*not* believe you kept this a secret…. CAN NOT BELIEVE IT! i am in complete shock.

  205. I figured as much! Congratulations!

  211. Can hardly wait for baby “monkeys” to start showing up on the blog. AND your LOL bag would make a perfect baby tote, or did you have that planned all along…..the very best to you and G and your wee little one to be.

  215. Congratulations! That baby is going to have some beautiful handknits!

  216. Oh yeah, I meant to add to go get yourself some Phildar Layette books (they’re only 5 euros a pop). Phildar has the best baby patterns around. Even better than DROPS, imho.

  217. Congratulations!!! If you and the baby can hold out for another week…you could have an April Fool’s Day baby! That’s my birthday and it’s the absolutely BEST day for a birthday. Do feel better…the puking does stop eventually 🙂

  218. delurking to say congratulations!!

  219. I knew it. Know how? Cuz, I’m right there in the same boat with you, sistah. (I’m due in mid-February.)
The excessive puking thing may have to do with our age. (I’m 37 too.) This is my 4th one, and I have NEVER had morning sickness like this. Couldn’t even keep water down sometimes. And forget knitting, it made it worse.
I went to my OB/GYN and got a prescription for Zofran. Highly recommend it if you haven’t already tried it. It is expensive if you don’t have great insurance, but to be able to eat 95% of the time and keep it down, is freakin’ fantastic! Plus, it allowed me to start knitting again.
I am so happy for you and G!!!! Now the girls at Blue Moon need to make a Baby JanOne color when the time comes. 🙂

  220. Phiou. We can stop holding our collective breath now…Hooray for you! Did the doc tell you that the puking’s good and means you’ve got the right amount of hormones? When my doc told me that, I nearly smacked him upside the head.
I’m wicked happy for you, dude.

  221. That is wonderful. I hope you feel better soon.

  222. Congratulations!!

  223. Wow! Talk about blowing me over. Congratulations! So that’s what’s been up for the last few months. I hope everything goes well and you get over the throwing up part. I see some baby knitting in your future.

  224. Congratulations!!

  225. Woohoo! Congratulations!
Perhaps a mitered square baby blanket is in order? 🙂

  226. Congratulations! You must be sure to share some cute pregnant belly pictures. What an exciting time for you.

  227. ooh WOW!
Congrats–i had no idea that was coming.
let’s hope the puking stops soon (i had it for 4 months of both my pregnancies and to this day cannot drink gingerale)
lemonaid and candied ginger worked for me.
    hope you feel better soon

  228. Congratulations!

  229. LeighB in ATL says

Babies are awesome! Congratulations on your blessed event and best wishes for continued good health for you and baby (and no more puking). Ginger snaps might help a bit, and have you heard about the preggie pops? I didn’t really have the puking so much, but I’ve heard these work for some people. Hope you feel better soon and can enjoy the experience more. It’s amazing what our bodies can do!

  230. Hugzzzzzzzz.

  352. Congratulations, awesome, truly awesome!

  353. Woo hoo! At last — I’m so happy for you!!!!!! And papaya enzyme will help with pregnancy induced nausea or heartburn — don’t like papayas or papaya juice? You can get it in caplets in the vitamin aisle.

  367. Congratulations, Cara! Happiness and hugs, all around.

  368. Congratulations! You’ll have a ton of fun being a mom. Peppermint tea helped me with the morning sickness, btw. (Then when you get the backaches, a hot water bottle helps. Then when you get the swollen feet, cold packs help!)

  369. Brilliant! So great! And if you hit March 24, it’ll be Kay’s birthday too, which wouldn’t be a half-bad day for a baby.

  370. Many, many, many congratulations! Best of luck!

  384. Yes! Congratulations! I guessed correctly, and I am so happy for you! You really deserve this, and I am sending best thoughts to the little one to stay safe and sound.

  385. Congratulations-and it will end eventually!Listen, I was so beyond “sick” with all of mine (4 preg, 3 babies) and you will become sick of all of the so called “remedies” people suggest (that do not help, unfortunately-go with drugs, and strong ones!!!)-here’s a great website that is supportive and understanding of extreme sickness: http://www.hyperemesis.org If you need any encouragement with the barfing issue, c’mon over to my blog and visit and we’ll get in touch!!

  386. Congratulations!

  387. I knew it! A few posts ago I turned to my boyf and said “This girl might as well be a soap opera character who is mysteriously throwing up for no good reason…there is sooooo a little one on the way”
I am so so happy for you and G. Fingers toes and eyes crossed for a safe and healthy few months ahead.

  388. The best reason of all for puking, wouldn’t you agree?

  395. Yay! Congrats!

  396. had a feeling and really am so very very very thrilled for you!!

  397. Congratulations!!!!!!!

  398. Oh, Cara…. I am so happy for you! A baby gives you so many reasons to celebrate: birth, birthdays, and looking into the future you see graduations and weddings and still more births! Suddenly the future seems very real and very meaningful, doesn’t it?
And I bet you never knew how much you would “enjoy” nausea, when it is evidence of a much wanted and waited for little one!

  399. Congratulations!!!

  400. I’m so happy for you!! Email me if you have any questions or want to just laugh with me at being “advanced maternal age!” I have a month left to go. All was great from week 10 to about week 35. Then I started feeling crappy again. Now you will have to knit for someone other than yourself–at least someone who is part of yourself! Congrats!!!

  406. cara-been reading your blog for a long time but have never commented before, but i just had to because i’m so happy for you! CONGRATULATIONS!!

  407. Congratulations! “Morning” sickness is a cruel joke, huh? I never threw up but felt completely nauseous ALL day… of course, that pregnancy ended very sadly without a living baby– I’ve heard, though, that having bad morning sickness points to having the pregnancy go well. Anyway, many congratulations! I hope I can join you in the pregnancy club again very soon 🙂

  408. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
I’m so glad that an incredible love like that between you and George has been able to produce a miracle like this.
    Here’s to a healthy pregnancy!

  409. Congratulations!!!

  410. congratulations!

  411. Congrats! And hold on tight for a wild ride!

  412. Congratulations! It’s so hard to be happy about something when it’s making you so sick. I hope the next 28 weeks are much, much kinder to you.

There’s so much love and happiness that comes with a baby. Deepest, most heartfelt congratulations. You are smart and capabale and will be a fine parent. I can’t wait to hear how your nesting instinct kicks in!

  420. SO HAPPY FOR YOU AND G!! We just celebrated my son, George’s, 16th birthday yesterday. (He was born on Labor Day, his sense of timing and humor is just as good now as the day he was born.) March 23 is going to give you an Easter Baby, I love New Beginnings.

  421. To paraphrase my old friend Horshack: “Cara! You’re a little mothuh!” Congratulations to you and G. I’m so very, very happy for you.
And I second Mel’s observation. I’m dying to see the colorway that the Blue Moon team launches in honor of your babe.

    WOO! BABY! WOO!

  429. 🙂

  430. Absolutely wonderful!!!Congrats!

  431. Congratulations!!! I hope the “morning sickness” abates soon. (What a stupid name for it. Wouldn’t it be great if it was ONLY in the morning?)
I’m a bit less than 3 weeks ahead of you, 12 weeks today, so I *should* have suspected you were pregnant. But early pregnancy apparently has lowered my IQ dramatically.
At any rate, hang in there and soon the magical second trimester will arrive. Then with any luck you can enjoy your pregnancy to the fullest. I have never enjoyed living in my body more than when I was pregnant the first time around with the twins. 🙂

  432. Now THAT’s a great photograph… one of your best. Congratulations! You’ve probably already tried everything, but my sister and sister-in-law both found ginger tea to be helpful.

  433. Such wonderful news! Congrats to you all, and sending you good getting-past-the-‘morning’-sickness vibes!!

  434. One thing I found to be true after the birth of my now 14 year old girl: she was the greatest Finished Object ever. Best wishes to you as you knit together this little person.

  435. mazel tov! if there’s any way in which i can help, give me a holler. sending you and g love and all my best wishes!

  436. Congratulations!!!! That is wonderful news!!!

  439. Congratulations! I was hoping you’d have news like this…enjoy, it does get better!

  440. Congratulations. My daughter, also named Cara, is due this month with her first child. It’s so exciting to be having a baby! You are going to have a terrific time when you get past the nausea. Be usre to eat – it helps

I’ve finally gotten over the puking and am into the boneweary exhaustion! It sucks, but I’ll take it over puking so hard I see stars.
    Yay.

  445. Well, I’ll be. I thought you might be adopting when you said before you weren’t pregnant, so I wasn’t prepared for this announcement!
Congratulations, there is nothing better!! Truly.

  446. This is fantastic! I’m very happy for you. March babies are pretty awesome. (Mine will be 6 months old tomorrow. Seriously, where does the time go???)

  460. I knew it, I knew it! I’m so glad to be right this time. Congratulations! I hope the nausea improves. I sucked on lemondrops a lot (for some reason that sounded really really good one day) and that helped. Take care of yourself! xoxo

  461. excellent! When you’re ready to hear a positive natural childbirth story, let me know!

  462. here i am, weeping onto the keyboard! congrats! enjoy every moment…even the puking! my savior against the pukes was those little orange peanut butter crackers (a carb and a protein). i lived on them throughout my pregnancy.

  463. I don’t know how you can bear to say it out loud. It seems too wonderful to be true, so how can you stand to tell everyone? (Oh, yeah, this is you we’re talking about. The real question, then, is how did you manage to keep it to yourself this past month?!?) CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Congratulations! What exciting news! Hang in there…I felt nauseous too during pregnancy. It just means that things are going as they should. Take care and keep on knitting!

  488. So. After like 500 comments… I doubt you’ll even see this one! but big congrats on the baby making. You inspire me. We’ve been trying for 3 years now (and I had an ectopic in the middle there which really sucked). I’m gearing up to start IVF this fall and I’m kind of freaking out. Like, it’s taken so long to get pregnant, I’m freaking out about the being a mother thing (I saw in your 100 things about me that you freaked about about IVF too). We were slated to start IVF the Feb.. and I totally couldn’t deal with it. So – knowing that you did it, and it worked!!! is exciting for me.
Obviously I’ll be lurking on here to cheer you on! Have you seen the Moderne Log Cabin baby blanket? I bet your baby would love one of those!

  489. Aw, congratulations, to both of you! I kinda thought that’s what your secret was.
    A long time fan.
    Sheri in GA
