Jaywalker Ten!

Before I get on with the updates, I’d ask you all to bow your heads for a moment of silence. This is the first week, since October 19, 2005, that I did NOT complete a jaywalker sock. I’ve gone back to some other projects and my latest jaywalker has suffered for it and you know what? I miss the damn sock. Much more than I thought I would. Sniff. Sniff. I’m going to Philly tomorrow for the weekend and I’ll be knitting that sock on the train, goshdarnit!

That said, the Albuquerque STITCH AND BITCH (am I allowed to say that?) got together this week and apparently SEVEN knitters cast on for SEVEN pairs of Jaywalkers ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Was it like a feat of sychronized knitting or were you too busy flipping off the camera in your best Johnny Cash to bother with timing? Carole and Scout have pictures to prove it – as if we wouldn’t believe something so ridiculous! JAYWALK ON GIRLS!

Updates? You want updates? You got it. With new and improved smileys. Don’t forget to read the LEGEND, Ann. I’ve also added superfantastic blinky stars to the participant list. If that doesn’t spur you on to finish a pair, I don’t know what will. Oh and if you’re missing from the updates, it’s because I didn’t see anything on your blog. I’m sorry if I missed you. If you’re worried that you aren’t in the KAL, please check the participant list before emailing me. Thank you!

Legend:

= Everything’s going A OK! Making progress!

= ^&$#$%@ this ^&$^$#%$#%@ SOCK!

= We’re JAYWALKING BAYBEE! FINISHED!!

= Special Smiley For Ann

  1. w00t!! It was actually EIGHT knitters rockin’ the hiz-ouse with our Jaywalkers! The flipping off was only a momentary lapse in our otherwise very. serious. knitting session.

  2. Hahaha. DID YOU SKIM MY BLOG TODAY?!? I know I didn’t email you special and there weren’t any pics and hardly a mention and maybe I was too late, but I DID mention Jaywalkin’ in my post today. Like you, I’ll be back at it this weekend (but not on a train). I’m totally just giving you a hard time…
LOVE the blinky stars — and Ann’s special smiley (you’re so sweet). Have a good time in Philly. Will there be birthday cake?

  3. Looks like there are more thumbs up than head bangers. That’s a good sign.

  4. Love the legend!!

  5. I keep chanting to myself, “I finished a sock! I FINSIHED A SOCK!” Thanks for the always inspirational, and adorable, update. You are much appreciated! 😉

  6. I am feeling very proprietary over my smiley – can we call it ann? fyyff!

  7. love the smileys! i actually finished my first sock…but my link on your site goes to an old post. at any rate, i am psyched. and in awe of all of your amazing jaywalkers! great KAL. thanks.

  8. I love my little head in the brick wall guy. By next update things will be better!
    I like the format!

  9. Hey, not to complain but I should have cheerleader for one finished pair. I just happen to have 3 more jaywalkers started!

  10. Too bad I can’t get mine to work!!! I’m still struggling. I think I need 1.5’s and we don’t even HAVE them at the store. I’m ready to give up.
Maybe I just need some sleep?

  11. You have pushed me over the edge with this one. I’d been dragging my heels about the Jaywalker because my entire, yes, entire, stash of sock yarn is self-patterning and the JW pattern cautioned against using fair isle stuff, right? Not that I usually follow the rules or suggestions. The Sweet Tarts Simple Stripes are beautiful! Now to find time to CO for them. Thanks for the push…I think. ;o)

  12. Do you only update people with blogs? I sent you an update via comments, and I’m in your participants, but not in the updates? (Insert sad smiley face here!)

  13. I have cast on and am into the pattern. everything is going smoothly so far. would you add me to the list when you get a chance?

  14. Hi Cara! Love the smileys. Hope you have a great weekend!

  15. Is it too late to join the Jaywalker knitalong? I’ve been dithering. But if there’s still time, I’d love to get in on the action — I love this pattern!

  16. My post didn’t make the update, but I have a picture of my Jaywalkers-in-progress on my blog now, if anyone wants to see them. 🙂

  17. We should do some Jaywalker knit-alonging the next time you are in Philly!

  18. I have finished my bright pink Jaywalker socks, a couple of minor needle breakages along the way, but the socks still got done, thanks to having a spare set, they were in a .5 larger size, but I just had two size 2 needles and two size 2.5 needles.

  19. Ann Carpenter says

    Hi Cara,
Just caught up about your husband and his hip replacements he’s facing. Well, don’t worry too much(I know you have to worry some. It’s part of the definition of WIFE.) My dear MIL had both knees done after her 80th birthday and did very, very well with it. She will be 89 in May and is still getting around just fine so, if she can do it, he can do it. Just pray hard, love hard, and make him mind what the doctor says. That will be the hardest part. My darling has had two heart attacks so I know whereof I speak! Best of luck and I will put you both on my prayer list.
Ann in not so dry anymore Dallas

  20. Well, totally not liking my yarn. NOTE: I have not used the word **hate** yet but we’re getting there!
Gonna stash dive and cast on again.

  21. hey there, I finished my Jaywalkers!
    thanks for doing this KAL!

  22. I made the list!! Woo hoo! Thanks, Cara, you’re a doll for doing this.
AS SOON AS I’m done with the Red Scarf for Orphans, there’ll be another pair of Jaywalkers started. I’m so addicted. Besides, the sooner all my stash of Regia is used, I can start buying STR with no pangs of guilt. 🙂

  23. Really. The Johnny Cash tribute only lasted a split second. The rest of the time was pure Jaywalking.

  24. I finally started my jaywalkers and thus finally see what all the fuss is about. I don’t know if it’s the pattern or the yarn I’m using (sweet georgia) but I can’t put them down! I was so bewitched that I was five inches into the leg before I faced the fact that the sock was too big, too wide. I toyed with the idea that I could give them away to someone with very large calves, but couldn’t come up with anyone and knew I really couldn’t part with them. So I’ve gone down a needle size and am starting over. Hopefully, my next post will be a beautifully finished pair!
    Laura

  25. Danggggg! That’s a lot of people! I finished my third pair of Jaywalkers last week. Here’s the link:
    http://nodda.wordpress.com/2006/01/22/i-got-the-golden-ticket/
Yay! I get a smiley with pompoms!

  26. HI, Just discovered your blog in a search for “Jaywalker” kindred spirits. I just got six skeins of STR and have started in on a pair in “Queen Rock.” If it’s not too late, I’d like to be added to “The List” which will motivate me to finish this pair quickly!
I’m also in yarnharlot’s knitting olympics for a baby blanket so I’ve got my work cut out for me.
Can I assume if I use your stats (25 pattern repeats till the heel flap) I’ll have enough yarn with one 360 yd. skein of STR? Or would I have to order more (like I’d need an excuse for that!)?
    Thanks!
    Michele

  27. Hihi.. No complaints, but there is (will be in a few minutes) a new jaywalker post on my blog.
Your animated smiley list is SOOO cute!!!

  28. Hi Cara,
Just finished my first sock. Will be casting on #2 in the next few days.
    Love this pattern.
