WTF?! It’s Wednesday!

Time to get random….

See this boy? Is he not the cutest boy in the universe? Today this sweet boy had tubes put in his ears. He’s on his way home now, everything went fine, but think good thoughts for one of my favorite kids in the whole wide world. THANK YOU!

The inaugural YARNIVAL is here!!!

Eve did a FANTASTIC job with the first issue – I encourage you all to head over and read it. Really nicely done. AND she’s accepting submissions for issue 2. So see what you’ve got and SUBMIT!

Crazy Stitchy not only has a new crazy book, but she’s come up with BLOGGER BINGO!!!

Are you going to Rhinebeck? Then you NEED to know about this. And what better way to fill up your squares then at the BLOGGER MEET-UP! That’s right. I’ll be organizing my now infamous (move to the other side of the grass damnit!) blogger meet up. Same time, same place as last year. Details to come, but keep it in mind. Saturday. 1ish. Side of the main barn.

I played tennis again with G and kicked his ass. Okay, really only on like two or three points but they were legitimate winners. REAL WINNERS. Not him half-assed running to the ball and saying “good shot babe.” He ran to the ball and tried to get it back and couldn’t. There was cursing. DUDES. I was FORCING ERRORS. I also twisted the same goddamn ankle again, but it’s okay and we won’t be playing at all this weekend. Although there will still be tennis: we’re going to the Open tonight. Oh and boo hoo hoo Gagassi. Never ever liked him. I’m a Pistol Pete girl. (C’mon! It’s well known I’ve got a thing for Greeks!) I’ve seen Agassi play a million times. Been thisclose to him when he was practicing at the hotel I was staying at out in Palm Springs. Eh. I don’t know who we’re seeing tonight, but I know I’ll be wishing I was playing instead of watching. Kind of new for me.

Remember those movies when the rats or bunnies or hamsters would mutate and become giants and take over the world? I SAW ONE OF THESE MUTANT RATS IN PERSON!

This picture doesn’t do it justice. We were at a small local zoo with the kids last week and we turned a corner and THERE WAS THIS GIANT FREAKING RAT! Scared the hell out of me. My nephew said look at the cute giant hamster, but this baby had RAT written all over it. It was one of those things that fascinates and terrifies all at the same time – you know? It’s technically called a Capybara and it’s the largest rodent in the world. They can get up to 175 pounds!!!!! Giving me nightmares.

Speaking of nightmares, last night G and I watched the first two acts of Spike Lee’s When The Levees Broke. You should all see it if you can. It’s heartbreaking and shameful. And so far I don’t feel an agenda being played out. Only once has Spike made his presence known and it was actually kind of funny. I’m not a big Spike Lee fan, but this is very well done – honest, stark, brutal. G and I are going to New Orleans tomorrow night for a three day weekend. I feel like I want to DO SOMETHING while I’m there, but I’m afraid being a tourist may be all I can do. Very scary stuff.

Thanks to everyone who purchased yarn yesterday in my stash sale!! I’m going to leave the few items left up for the day – if they don’t sell by tomorrow I’m taking them down and I’ll rethink the kit. If anyone is interested in any part of what’s left – send me an email (address at bottom of this page) and I’ll figure something out with you. THANK YOU!

Have a GREAT day!

PS – My site STILL looks like crap in IE. Anyone know a whole lot about CSS and IE compatibility? I tried changing the font codes to px instead of small, x-small, which I have now and it helped with the font size, but IE is still not recognizing the padding on my img borders and it messes up the fonts regardless when it appears after the image. Any and all help is appreciated. I generally use Firefox to view my site, but it bothers me to no end to know that it’s out there not looking how I wanted it to look. THANKS!

Comments

  1. Owen had two sets of tubes–no problem. Gracie had ’em also. And her tonsils and adenoids out to boot (and ate a hot dog for dinner that night). He’ll be fine. I hope he got something special to keep him entertained.

  2. Cara, email me copies of your sidebar.php and stylesheet. Its your sidebar your having issues with, correct? (I took a peek in IE because I also mostly use firefox)
I can’t promise anything, but I had similar issues with my new wordpress blog last week. DH gave me lots of pointers on fixing it up.

  3. Sending loads of good thoughts to your beautiful boy. As to Rhinebeck, I’m not a blogger, but as a devoted hanger-on, can i pop by and say hi?

  4. Your site is perfectly readable in IE. I just checked.
Have you heard of the 80/20 rule? 80% of the thing is done with 20% of the effort, and the remaining 20% of the thing will require 80% of the effort. Anyway, I think you are in the last 20% and you might want to consider that it’s “Good enough”.
Or you can call me a slacker and get it perfect. 🙂

  5. Aw, I love capybaras! And their noses aren’t pointy enough for rats. 🙂

  6. Regina had better come by!! That little one is so cute and I hope that smile will now be on his face more often.
I’m not seeing any difference between your blog on IE or Foxfire and if I did I couldn’t help!

  7. Thanks for the Yarnival link, Cara. I was pleasantly surprised to see myself in the list.

  8. Hi Cara, long-time reader, first-time commenter here (see, we’re coming out of the woodwork, just like you asked!). I’m loving all your gorgeous knee socks these past weeks, you’ve inspired me to take on another pair after some gift socks are done.
Regarding your style sheet troubles, I’m not too familiar with php, but I’ve done a fair amount with css. My site uses image padding and it shows up in both Firefox and IE. If you would email me your style sheet, I’d be glad to take a look at your image class and see if I can help.

  9. Well, I can tell you right now, add me to that Rhinebeck list. I will BE there!! (And, I know, Blogger Bingo. What a hoot of an idea!)
I agree about “When the Levees Broke,” too–incredible piece of film.

  10. It is so unfair when you flash those cutie-pie pictures and I know you can’t take them of my guy. So, so unfair.

  11. OMG. I’m surprised I have the compsure to type right now, after seeing a picture of that humongous ratthing. Just had to say, When the Levees Broke was fabulous…and horrible and sad. Really well done. I hope a lot of people see it.

  12. I used to live in NOLA, and my hub grew up down there. If this is a return trip for you, then prepared for how desolate certain areas feel (even some of the touristy areas). The destruction is unreal. But hopefully, you will still manage to eat some fabulous meals (the local economy needs tourists).

  13. Holy shit, there should be leash laws for those things!
    I’m so excited about BINGO! ; )
Little bro looks like his sister! ; ) Extra smoochies for him today!!
Have fun in New Orleans. I think being a good tourist is one of the best things you can do.

  14. Thanks for the great links. I learned a lot from Yarnival.

  15. Thanks for the movie tip, we’ll be checking it out! As for IE troubles, if the above commenter can’t help with it, send it my way. My hub is a budding website developer and has taken some classes on making things line up with some set of standards (does that sound vague enough? I have no idea what it all means…). He might be able to help.

  16. Cara – We had a Capybera loose in our area a couple of weeks ago! Massachusetts! The thing was drinking out of ponds and raiding gardens. They finally returned it to it’s rightful owner. Thanks for the Yarnival link, great stuff!

  17. I wish I were going to Rhinebeck – just to play blogger bingo. I thought that was such a great idea!
Capybera’s look so prehistoric. I swear there are a couple of those in the wierd paintings in the exhibits in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum. I think they are gnawing down some massive pre-historic trees.

  18. Okay, HERE’S a capybara story for you! We have two at our local (teeny tiny) zoo, and a couple of years ago I was walking through the zoo with my then 2yo daughter. We got near the little capybara pond, and I looked over, and they were mating, right in the middle of the pond! I was, um, a little surprised. I have to admit that I distracted my 2yo by quickly pointing over at the lemurs, as I was not quite ready to explain THAT act of nature yet. 😉
And I’ll be at Rhinebeck! woo hoo!

  19. Duncan had tubes put in when he was 10 months old and the difference was instantneous. (He had 11 ear infections in 10 months- YIKES) Seriously, we were home from the procedure in a few hours from when it started and his balance AND hearing were amazingly better. The tubes stayed in for about 9 months and he did great the whole time. I was shocked at how truly small the tubes can be. The little guy will do great.
The browser we use is IE and you look beautiful, dahlink! Never have I thought there was a problem with January One, ever!

  20. Holy cow! That rat is going to keep me up tonight. It looks as big as a boar. Oye! If there is anything I hate it is rodents!!!

  21. Well think of it this way – by going to New Orleans even as a tourist and spending money there (buy yarn!), you’re stimulating the economy and helping the city recover. Being a tourist is a good thing!

  22. Yes, yes. Spend money and have a good time – it’s the best way you can help. I live here in New Orleans (actually in the suburb of Metairie) and the city lives and dies by tourism. The French Quarter and its shops and restaurants are crying for visitors. Enjoy my city! 🙂

  23. You look great in Safari, babe. Sorry I can’t be more hepful … I don’t even have IE on my Mac!

  24. Yippee…I’m coming to Rhinebeck! I’m so excited I can hardly stand it!! So now I can say, see ya soon!

  25. My little guy had tubes in last year, and it looks like he might need a second set. The improvement was instant. The worst part of the experience? His Dad and I were desperate for a nap that afternoon after having to be at the hospital so early and not sleeping much the night before, but the little guy would have none of it. Just wanted to play.
    Must check out the bingo…

  26. Okay, delurking as ordered… congrats on the safe insertion of tubes… I work as a speech pathologist and see heaps of little ones who need them. Very helpful for clearing up ear infections.

  27. He’s adorable glad everything went well! Love the Blogger Bingo I will have to go over and sign myself up.

  28. He’s a beautiful baby. I’m sorry to hear about the tubes. 🙁 That’s really hard.

  29. Cara, I think it’s so great you’re going to NO. After I saw that Spike Lee movie, I had the same inclination. I wanted to go and spend my money there to help that city when our government and their government clearly isn’t. Tourist dollars are definitely helpful. Go. Have fun. Spend money. And tell those of us who life vicariously all about it. –Sally

  30. I heard of those gaint things and googled for a pic and was horrified at the size of that thing next to a person. I talked about it for days, it made my skin itch just looking at it.

  31. I don’t have anything helpful to add, but I’m on an iMac G5, and your sidebar’s been cut into chunks for me. Now it reads “On the nights” instead of “nightstand” and I’m only getting half the book.
New Orleans? I’m jonesing to go and spend money. Eat at the Court of the Two Sisters if you can – so pretty!

  32. Coming out of lurk-dom… Have fun at the Open! We watch the whole thing and have plans to go one of these years!
Although I must say, I think capybaras are sort of cute!

  33. R.O.U.S.’s !!!!! (Rodents of Unusual Size)
I think this is the one that attacked Westley in the Fire Swamp!!!!!! (Or quite possibly the one that tried to take a chunk out of Buttercup!) I just love it when life imitates art!
And thank you for the yarn sale! Can’t wait to get my portion of the stash! (You made me break my vow! Enabler! Enabler!) :=)

  34. what a cutie! I had the tubes in my ears too. Have a fabulous time in NOLA, I tivoed the Spike Lee special, but I haven’t watched it yet. Take Care…I’m a little over the Agassi hype too, I mean he’s 36 and so much left to do with his life. Oh well…take care and thanks for sharing the “rat” pic.

  35. De-lurking, too, with a great children’s book: Hooway for Wodney Wat. The hero is a small, shy rat; he sends meanie Camilla Capybara off into the sunset.

  36. Oh man, Capybaras are SO CUTE! I do a thing on my other blog sometimes where I post pictures of cute things, and I really should do a feature on the capybara. Not as cute as baby tapirs, but nothing is as cute as baby tapirs.
    Par example.
When tubes are put through the eardrum, does that injure it in any way? Oh my goodness, my heart and ears go out to that cute little soccer playing boy.
Let me know if you’re still having problems in IE or if they’ve been solved, I’ll have access to a PC by Friday!

  37. Cara, if, say, a fellow blogger who loves your blog and wants to thank you for all the inspiring photographs and work (esp. log cabining!) wanted to send you a handspun gift, where would they send it to?

  38. I haven’t been lurking, just trying to get the house in order. I’m so, so geared up over Rhinebeck! This will be my first year there. We’re going to spend 5 days there eating at the CIA, drinking at the vineyards (Absolutely Fabulous in France-style) and playing with wool, okay he’s going to look at airplanes while I play with wool, so this Bingo idea sounds good to me.

  39. I had dozens of sets of ear tubes (or “grommets” as we call them in the UK – much cuter, non?) when I was young. They were amazink and made a real difference to my hearing. Hope the cute boy has a similarly good experience.

  40. I use IE to view your blog, Cara, and it doesn’t look terrible to me at all. Have fun in NO!

  41. That Spike Lee documentary is very good. Wait until you get to act 3, when it becomes really depressing – I haven’t had time to watch the last hour yet but I’m guessing it might also be a tear-jerker. So well done though, and I agree that there isn’t an obvious agenda flowing through it, aside from, “wow, what a tragedy and the incompetence in the response” which was likely clear to all observers and thus, to me, does not an agenda make!

  42. I was at the Open yesterday. I just love that tournament! I saw the women’s semis. Good stuff.
My sister and I are going to Rhinebeck. See you at the side of the main barn! I’m so excited, I’m a Rhinebeck virgin!
