Today, my pretties, we’re not going to talk about knitting. Yesterday was a really blah knitting day and kind of a blah day in general. (You know, it’s really hard to re-enter the atmosphere after such a fabulous knitting experience. Every project seems, well, pedestrian at this point. I’m sure it will pass soon.) Well, maybe a teeny tiny VERY important little bit about knitting….
Mr. Etherknitter, as most of you know, was in an awful skiing accident a while back and he hasn’t had as much progress as we’d all like in the bone growth department. So as all good knitters are wont to do in a time of need, we’re knitting for GROWTH! Find the details about Mr. Etherknitter here and the details for knitting to make that bone grow here and thank Maryse for the button here. I will be doing my part and knitting a bit today, with bone growth in mind. Pass it on!
Okay, back to the issue at hand. The weather. I’m not a weather person. I strive for comfort in my life, the kind of comfort the great indoors can provide. That’s not to say I don’t like to go outside, on occassion, but the conditions have to be pretty close to perfect. That doesn’t mean sun all the time either – I’m perfectly happy on a cloudy slightly cold day. Or a sunny briskly cold day. Or a warm, but not too warm, breezy sunny day. Or a snowy cold gray day. You get the picture. I just don’t really care that much about winter. If I want to go outside I go outside but most of the time I’m perfectly content to stay in my nice climate controlled home. Not so my husband. While we are perfect for each other, we’re so different in so many ways. He LIVES to be outside. He’s a Leo, born in August, and I’ve always thought that really influenced his love for the sun. (Me, on the other hand, I’m a Cappy tried and true – nothing but the dark, cold, bleak depressing winter for us!!) Anyway, G’s love of the sun and all things warm and outdoors really dictate a lot in our life. He suffers horribly from SAD – the minute the turn those clocks back in October it’s like a death knell on our house. In contrast, the minute they turn them forward it’s like spring and candy and lightness and all things good! He’s out there EVERY weekend, and I mean every weekend, playing tennis, sitting by the pool, soaking in those Vitamin D laden rays. Me? I’m in the house. Knitting.
So G works extremely hard for our family and we like to take vacations – preferably to warm climeates. We were supposed to be away this week. Right this second I was supposed to be on a sunny Bermuda beach with a virgin icy drink in one hand and a half-knit sock in the other. Instead, I’m here with you all! Why? Because G started watching the weather about three weeks ago and it was dismal. When I tell you there wasn’t sun in sight I mean it was rain, rain, rain, rain like you wouldn’t believe. He becamse OBSESSED with the weather in Bermuda. When the forecast everyday was cold and rainy, he cancelled the trip. (Luckily for us there weren’t any penalites.) Then he went about finding some place else to go.
Last week he found it – a place he’s always wanted to go – it’s exclusive, gorgeous, consistently rated one of the best resorts in the world and we’ve just passed peak season so the rates are much lower. Cap Juluca. AKA Paradise. We leave on Mother’s Day and come back on Wednesday – it’s a quick trip but with nothing to do but bask in the sun and eat at 5 star restaurants it was looking to be relaxing and rejuvenating. But…but…
Hmm. Tropical paradise, no? We ended up getting into a big argument about it. We can’t cancel this trip and even though when the weather was looking bad in Bermuda I was all like well we’ll be together and who cares and I can knit in the rain and blah blah blah and then he canceled the trip. THIS time, well, I was in a bad mood and then I was like why bother going if all it’s going to do is rain!? And he was all like what happened to the togetherness and the knitting in the rain? And I was all like well now it’s a world class resort and how can you go in the rain? Of course, we’re still more than ten days out and things can change quickly and I know that in the Caribbean it can rain for like five minutes and be sunny the rest of the day. But I can’t help but be obsessed now.
ETA: Georgie just called me – he called the hotel. (Insanity runs in the family obviously.) While not explicitly saying he was crazy, the woman he spoke to said that yes, it has been raining, but that the mini rain storms come in and out and don’t last and that 80% of the day it’s sunny. He feels better, so I guess I feel better too.
And have you seen the weather forecast for the weekend?
Rain on Saturday. Rain on Sunday. Any suggestions on what we should do about the meet-up? I know I’ve been lax about getting the names up there. I promise to have it updated by Saturday. That’s all that counts, right?
If you’re looking for me in the next week, chances are I’ll be off checking the weather.
HI Cara,
So I live in Florida and that looks like our typical rainy season weather. Beautiful in the morning, a couple rain showers in the afternoon and it clears out. Hopefully that’s the case where you’re going!
Eh, I don’t melt, and heck, maybe if it rains the crowds will be light. (Ok, not really, just hoping…) 🙂
I stay stick with the plan!
The optimist in me sees the 40% chance of rain and is thinking it won’t rain. The realist knows it won’t happen that way.
It seems to be changing daily. I checked the forecast for Columbia (where my cousins live) and it was sunny for Sunday, scattered showers for Saturday. I think we will know much more by Thursday. As long as it’s not pouring, I think we are ok to keep the meet up as planned!
hey, Cara, can you add me to the meet-up list? I’m thinking I can stand the rain . . .
And I didn’t post on the weekend, but your shawl is fan-damn-tastic! You were beautiful ~
NOOOOo! You can’t have rain at Cap Juluca! I hear that place is one of a kind…and so wonderful.
We can’t have rain on Sat for the meetup! Can we move it inside? I’ve never been to MSW, but there has to be some inside place “in case of rain”…
*fingers crossed*
We New Englanders are pretty obsessed about weather too. But, then again, so is my FIL in California. To the point that when my kids call him, they ask “how’s the weather?” I am a bitter, bitter girl about Sat. 🙁
According to the weather man this morning it is just light occasional showers, not true rain. Lets all cross our fingers.
Not commenting on the weather, but sign me up for the MD meet up! And your shawl, dress, outfit, hair was gorgeous.
The weather is the weather… what can you do? Walking in the rain is nice. ; ) I’d go, enjoy the complimentary “Welcome rum punch on arrival” and then order another, que sera sera…
I don’t think I’d like rain so much at a fiber fest, though.
You can’t control it, you just have to accept it and have fun in spite of it. I’ve done loads of reenactments in the rain and, while it’s not my preferred weather, it’s still fun. Hope it all works out the way you want.
I don’t think it’s going to be an all day rain but I think of a place inside. In the back of the big building where all the fleeces are, it’s a little more quiet. Way in the back. Just a thought. Just let us know where you will all be. K?
As you know I’m a weather freak. You can’t hide all the time and you never know if the forcasts are true. Most of the time they are not. You’ll have a good time with G no matter the circumstances…you always do, right?
I figure we won’t melt so it should be okay to keep the meeting set as planned. Besides, how can it not be fun with all the fleece, yarn and knitters around?
My Mom’s doing the same thing for the Martha’s Vineyard weather the week of Mother’s Day . . . Is there a point where this sort of thing crosses over from “just trying to know what to pack” to “obsession?”
Ha ha ha ha ha…!
Oh dear.
I mean, I’m going? (but on Sunday, so I’ll miss the meetup) and I so very much do not want to walk around in the rain?
…but how funny is it that the only days it’s raining is the weekend?
Do you remember four years ago, when it rained for the second half of May and the first half of June? I asked Miss B in the middle of this if she still wanted to go to MA Sheep & Wool (Memorial Day weekend) for both days even if it poured rain the whole time. “Mom,” she said, “there are barns.” She was six at the time and already had the “I cannot fathom how you survived to such an advanced age with so few functional brain cells” tone totally down. The teenage years will be such fun, I thought.
Anyway. It won’t rain the whole time, and while it is raining I doubt not that you can find something else to do :). And I really really really wish I could go to MD. Even if it does rain, there are probably barns.
i went to hawaii in march, and the weather forecast looked VERY similar to the one for anguilla. however, even though it did rain some days, we still had beautiful weather and an awesome time! it usually rained in the morning and then cleared up! plus, we were in the rainforest. it’s supposed to rain there, right?
I think we should meet as planned except with raincoats or umbrellas.
We went to Hawaii in March and the forecast, right up until the day we left, was for rain every single day. We got there and it rained one day out of eight…I always say I should get a job as a weather forecaster b/c even though they are never right, they never get fired! Have a great trip…
It can’t rain the whole time in MD this weekend. I just bought new shoes.
Rain stinks, but rain somewhere tropical is romantic. You’ll have a great time regardless! Indoor activites!!!
It will still be tons of fun, no matter what! Just so happens that my rain slicker is *green*! Looking forward to seeing you again, C! 🙂

Ew.
I do not care for the smell of wet sheep.
However, I do so love the sheepiness…and will weather the storm (I’m so sorry for the pun, but the rain outside and the thought of rain this weekend has me in a dismal mood, and when dismal, pun…that’s my motto) and wear a hoodie. I’ll still meetup. Look for the blonde dragging her mom, friend and friend’s sister from stall to stall squeeling from within her oversized hoodie-that’ll be me.
I spent my honeymoon at Cap Juluca. Going to Anguilla is worth every penny.I have stayed at a couple of other resorts on the island but Cap is still my favorite. I love that little island.
Another Floridian here. We sure could use the rain down here. Rain to me = knitting!
But then, sun to me = knitting.
Make the most of it!
Hi, I am your secret sock dyeing pal. I have been checking your cool blog to get an idea of what colors you like! Let me know if you have preferences!

ooooh! There’s lots of thigns to do in Baltimore! I’d be happy to take you (and all of our nearest and dearest) on a tour around the city, stopping at my favorite yarn store in the world, the Visionary Art Museum, a few Baltimore landmark eateries and rounding it out with the best beer in Baltimore! Interested? You? Me? Carrie? AnneMarie? More people with cars?
As a 10+ year veteran of MDSW, I can say if it rains, only the die-hards (like us) will be there. Families with strollers generally won’t show up, unless the stroller-pusher is a die-hard. Crowds should be manageable. Last year they were so heavy it was ridiculous. I’m actually hoping for rain. More yarn for me.
Hey, Cara,
Just wanted to drop a note to say that I’ll be at MD Sheep and Wool and hope to see you there! I’m not a blogger, but I’m a blog READER and another big fan of STR–thanks to you!
Julie
Thank you for the bone mojo! Xray in two weeks – Must Show Something from all this energy!
I am amazed at how wrong weather.com can be, even for just three days ahead. They are routinely wrong on the long term, 10 day forecasts. So all is not grim. Umbrellas. Marmot windbreakers. Works for me! See you soon.
I’m sure it will be beautiful and sunny for your trip. For this weekend, though, I’m not so sure, but I’m willing to stand the wetness for some bloggerness. Please add me to the meet-up list!
Two years ago I planned a trip for me and my sister to Miami and became overly obsessed with the weather. There ended up being a hurricane and we had to cancel the trip. Now anytime I plan a trip I’m forbidden to watch the weather channel or look at a weather website because, according to my sister, watching the weather makes bad weather happen.
I’m looking forward to MDSW even if it’s going to rain. I just need to remember my poncho.
I missed saying so this weekend – but DAM GIRL you look FAB!!! That shawl is amazing & you looked amazing in it!
Don’t fret about the weather – there’s LOTS to do inside while it’s raining. Besides it gets you away from home for a minute. Anyplace without work is a GOOD place to be.
I’ll probably be popping by on Saturday – can’t resist seeing bloggers in the wild!
Nothing worse than T.H.W.A.R.T.E.D. E.X.P.E.C.T.A.T.I.O.N.S. Might break up more relationships than anything else. Hope you have a wonderful time, whatever you do.
Oh yeah, I’ll be there early in morning and hopefully still there at 1:30!
Hey Cara,
No need to fret they were only predicting iffy weather for Saturday and slightly cooler. It is a gorgeous 82 deg day here! Anyway the forecast now has both Sat and Sun in low 70s partly cloudy and only 20% chance of precip. Yeah! However…. being married to a meteorologist I can tell you first hand the predictions leave something to be desired more times than not.
I’ll be at the MSW too. I can hardly wait!!
