Oh to be crazy like Bette and have a doctor like Claude!
Oh my goodness! I never noticed it before, but Bette Davis knits in the movie! And from what I can tell, she’s really knitting!

Heh. I only saw it once, in an ER room while my mom was all hopped up on narcotics and figuring out some kidney problem. I was grateful that the room had a TV, but I should probably watch the movie again under more normal circumstances.
We just saw Sweeney Todd on Broadway last weekend. A minor part of the plot requires Mrs. Lovett (Patti LuPone) to knit a muffler. I was in the balcony, but I’m pretty sure she was actually knitting. Although, someone should tell her she’s going to hurt herself making big throwing gestures like that.
She knits in the Catered Affair too – and she’s definitely really knitting.
I watch TCM all the time. One I recently saw had a man knitting!
In addition to the excellent crane shots of giant herds of sheep (plus sexy, sexy men) there was knitting going on in Brokeback Mountain. It seemed odd to me, though, with really, pronounced throwing going on. Yes. Knitting movies. And sheep.
Knit the Classics has a flickr site with vintage photos with a knitting theme, and I believe there are several of Bette Davis knitting on movie sets. I haven’t seen the movie, but it might be interesting to have a doctor like Claude. It definitely would be interesting to have a swain like Paul. 🙂
I noticed that a week or two ago when I was watching it (for the millionth time).
I would take up smoking for Paul Heinreid.
One of my all-time favorite movies. I want to take a cruise, so I can elegantly lounge on a deck chair and knit.
One of my all time favorite movies and yes she really is knitting – I saw an interview with her a long time ago where she said she knitted. I have always wanted to go on a cruise under an assumed name and be that glamerous and knit away on something gorgeous!
I think she really does knit. I’m pretty sure we have a photo of her knitting on our Flickr thingy at Knit the Classics.
Wow! I noticed that too. I watched it for the first time on Tuesday night when I was not watching Dubya. I even got my DH to join me. I noticed the knitting and we both noticed the incredible amount of smoking going on.
Well OF COURSE she knits, she’s a ‘repressed spinster’ isn’t she?
TCM’s synopsis: “A repressed spinster is transformed by psychiatry and her love for a married man.”
