The Exact Opposite of Relaxing

Earlier this week I wrote that my one wish for this weekend was to relax. Not go anywhere. You know – stay home and veg with my guy and my gal. Alas, it is not to be.

Tomorrow we are going to Florida. Yes. We’re getting on a plane with our baby and heading south.

We’ll only be gone a couple of days – we fly back Tuesday – and our reasons for going are both good and bad (everyone’s okay.)

Like I said. The exact opposite of relaxing.

If I make it through the flight without popping a Xanax I may actually be cured. With all of these phobias dropping like flies, Annie says I will have completely lost my edge and be yet another suburban mom driving a station wagon wearing mom jeans.

So I made sure I scored a few Xanax from the doctor. I mean, carrying around narcotics in the diaper bag definitely makes me edgy. Wouldn’t you say?

Wish us luck. Maybe you can relax for me.

    Good luck!

  2. Don’t worry about Xanax in a diaper bag. They only worry if you have too much liquid formula. After you’ved carried dirty diapers around for a while, Xanax will be a breeze. Hope you enjoy your quick trip.

  4. When I bought my Isuzu Rodeo back in 94, my dad looked at it and said “But you’re a mother of 3 what do you need a car like this for?” He was hinting that I needed a mini van which was anathema to me. I thought I was much edgier than that! And carrying xanax is no longer edgy. Sorry. When I mentioned to a coworker I carried some (I have clautrophobic anxiety issues), she pulled out hers! Maybe living the chemical free existence will become the new edgy.

  5. Good luck! Hope it all goes smoothly.

  6. The first time you travel with a baby you’re like “oh, my god, how will I ever do this” then you do it, and its really no big deal. Just feed her whenever she opens her mouth to cry. People on a plane would much rather see a baby nursing than hear it screaming.
I’m off on my first trip with our 3 kids next month (6 month twins and an almost 3 YO) if you don’t use the xanax, can you send it my way? I’m totally going to need it!

  7. Your biggest concern on the flight will be Meli’s comfort. Plan to nurse at take off and at landing. This will help her with popping her ears. Safe trip!

  8. You’ll be surprised how easy it is on her. Nurse a little and I bet she sleeps most of the time. It’s amazing how the noise and motion lulls them to sleep. Just don’t plan to move once she’s out!

  9. Hope all is going well, and that the Xanax wasn’t needed. Before my thesis defense, whenever anyone asked if I needed anything I would answer, “Got any Xanax?” I was only half joking.

  10. Good luck! Can’t relax for you, but I can send good wishes.

  12. Good luck! I’m sure it will go swimmingly… Raley took her first flight last week (with me being a single parent!) and it was much, much better than I had imagined. I’m sure Meli will charm all of your seatmates and then fall right asleep 🙂

  13. Good luck it is alway so hard to fly with a baby I hope things go well.

  14. I found worrying about flying with a baby was worse than actually flying with the baby and you’ll have George with you to help. It’ll be good. And I think you’re noticing that you can do anything supermamma!

  15. Oh, hon, I feel for you on the plane trip thing. I hate hate hate to fly. Someday, when you’re feeling like a laugh, go searching on my blog about our trip to Hawaii this past January, and about how they almost called security on me. Man. I can feel my chest tightening up just remembering it. And no, it wasn’t for the knitting needles either, it was something completely stupid.
But as far as your little darling goes…try to get her to nurse during take off and landing. The swallowing will help her ears pop and avoid the pain. I remember the last flight I took with a nursing baby, from FL to Chicago, he latched on the ENTIRE time. I started during take off, and he nursed for a minute and fell asleep, and I stuck my finger in there to break the seal, and he woke up and started fussing. I had the lady next to me give me a dirty look, so I thought, well, he’s not all the way asleep yet, so I put him back on. Repeated that whole thing about 3 more times before I gave up. He didn’t really nurse, but remained latched on the entire time. But now that I remember it, my left boob was way flatter than my right for about a day. Oh the things we do for love.
Have fun in FL though. Hope everything goes smoothly for you all.
