Every once in a while, the Knit Gods smile.
I’m not sure I can put into words how much I LOVE this sock. I love everything about it. The yarn, the electric colors, the PATTERN! I think I have chosen the EXACT pattern this yarn needed. EXACTLY. There is NO OTHER pattern that would work. What do you think?
There’s just one problem. Beth left me a comment yesterday and upon receiving it I went and checked out her lovely blog. She had just finished her own pair of STR socks, which are gorgeous by the way, and in reading her re-cap she pointed out something that I had missed. THERE ARE ONLY 325 YDS IN THE BIG SKEIN OF SOCKS THAT ROCK. Please take note of this people! That’s 25 yds LESS than two skeins of Koigu. Cherry Tree Hill gives you 370 yds. DUDE! The socks still rock, but just a teensey bit less.
I guess if I was a toe-up kind of girl this wouldn’t matter too much, but alas, I’m a downer, so I’m in a little bit of a panic. Beth was gracious enough to give me the measurements for her socks and I decided that I would get to a 6″ cuff and start the heel. It actually is okay so far – I’m ready to turn the heel. I do like a longer sock, but it seems that this particular sock wants to stop where it has – and I’m okay with that. I will though be in a panic for the entire knitting process until both socks are done and I know I’ll have enough yarn. Blah!
The real, real problem is that I LOVE these socks so much I want to knit them forever until the are so long they will cover my whole body like a ROCK STAR BODY SOCK. They are that beautiful to me.
Your socks are SO beautiful!! The pattern just seems to flow with the colors. And it looks so smooth. I have to get some of that yarn and work on my own!
Love the yarn, Love the pattern! You Rock, too!
to be read to the tune of Coppa-cabana
her name was Cara
she was a knitter
with Addi Turbos in her stash
she would sit upon her ass
and knit the whole day through
til she was black and blue.
she was young and she had the yarn
so what WOULD JES-US DO??
at the towers
the jersey towers
Cara sits and knits all day
and waits for George to come home to play…….
Wow, that really is the PERFECT pattern for that sock yarn. Gorgeous!
Now that has to be the prettiest sock I’ve seen ever! I love it. I printed out the pattern. Oh dear, dare I start yet another project?
You are SO RIGHT! They are the ROCKINEST socks I have seen in a while. I hope I have a pair turn out as well. Bummer about the yardage. This is one time I am glad to have teeny tiny feet.
Oh.my.god. I don’t know where to begin… the socks are GORgeous, they are truly the rockingest rock socks I’ve EVER seen. Perfect. How am I going to finish my lacy wonders when I want to do the Rockin’ JAYWALK?! I can understand the whole rock star body sox thing, too. Totally. But Ann. Lordy, lordy, than Ann… I’m cryin’ over here!!!!
I’m sorry Wendy, but today I love Ann just a little bit more.
Fucking hysterical. Thank you for that.
Ooooo. You’re right, perfect pattern, perfect yarn. All the stars lined up.
I’m making a scarf out of my own dyed yarn, and going through that tension of will-there-be-enough. I hate that.
i confess, when i first saw STR at The Fold’s booth, i was skeptical about the whole 325 yards thing. I don’t mind a shorter cuff, but I didn’t want to end up with anklets – but apparently, Toni swears you can get a pair out of one skein.
By the way, I hate you for making me want to go home RIGHT THIS MINUTE and cast on with my STR in that exact pattern. Dude – I’m at work!! I can’t do that!!
LOVE THEM, C! And Ann, your song ROCKS the comment page.
That yarn IS perfect! The ones I started mine with don’t work well at all. The colors pool and will start to spiral down my leg, ugh! I can’t wait to see these finished. I hope you manage to have enough yarn!
Awesome socks! I think you’re right – they’re the perfect marriage of yarn and pattern.
Now I have Barry Manilow singing in my head!
Chevron-y patterns look like they may be the way to go with these handpaints. Very Nice.
Now I see why you were gushing on the phone. It is a perfect mix of pattern and yarn! Ann the poet…who knew!? I’ll be laughing all day.
Wow! I do believe you found the perfect combination!
ok ok ok (wow) FIRST.
I have a Lendrum, come on down–we’ll do the capitol and you can snap pics in the Nat’l botanical museum.
TWO.
Ann is cuh-RACKin me up with the Copa.
and LASTLY,
I am so going to copy you and use that pattern for my STR. That sock kicks ass.
Go SOX!
If I was going to Lemming along with something, these socks would be it! The yarn looks even better knit up like that than alone, and even then, I thought it was cool!
Oh god, Ann just made me hurt myself…
those socks are FREAKING GORGEOUS, Cara!
wow! That’s an amazing combination. You really couldn’t have it better than that!!
Wow. That’s a gorgeous sock! I love the way the color and the pattern are working together!
You are so right. The yarn and pattern are perfect for each other. Very rockin!
wow!! That was quick knitting…….you MUST love that pattern!
the pattern truly fits the yarn. it looks great!
Ohhhh. They are gorgeous, perftect pattern for the yarn.
LOVE it.
That’s all :).
I recently finished a pair of STR. I have lots left over, so hopefully you’ll be fine.
I am in awe at the striping effect! Very Rock Star-ish. Flashy and cool.
Rock on…..
beautimous…just beautimous :o)
in the ‘running short of yarn’ department: it’s enough yarn for a pair of socks ONLY IF: you don’t make the uppers very long (i had to stop at about 5 1/2″ when i was going for at least 7);
you don’t have long feets (ie longer than oh say 9″ tops–the ones i did were pretty close to 10″);
and you don’t use much of a pattern stitch (most of which will, of course, utilize more yarn)
i’d seriously suggest you weigh the yarn left vs first sock often…i know you’re on a roll and would rather make a huge body sock ;o) (and i don’t blame you in the least), but it’s a real pain in the arse to have to rip it back…yessssss it’s nice enough to knit with twice lol, but if you’re over 2 oz with first sock it’s going to be very tense til the finish of sock 2 :o(
that being said…it’s WONDERFUL stuff innit? :o)
Wow, you’ve found your holy grail of knitted sock combinations! You can just stop after this pair, ’cause nothing will ever be as perfect again. ho ho ho! I know you’ll find more perfect combos in the future, but I do agree that this is one. Fun!!
WOW! That is the perfect pattern for that yarn! Wow! Seeing your socks makes me want to cast on for that pattern NOW! You’ll have plenty of yarn, don’t worry! I always end up with extra Koigu, and they are short skeins, so you’ll be fine! You can always weight the leftovers after you finish sock #1 to know for sure.
I echo the sentiments of all that came before me…STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL! Perfect marriage of yarn and pattern!
Another suggestion: get yourself a postal scale and weigh as you go! It’s paid for itself in a lot less “will I have enough yarn” anxiety!
Cara….it was great fun to meet another blogger at Rhinebeck. I must say you have sold me on these socks!! I rushed right to Magknits to get the pattern….they are just soooo cool!!!!
It is, indeed, a SOCK THAT ROCKS!!!
Oh, Ann, thank you SO MUCH for getting Barry Manilow into my head for the rest of the day.
lol.
I do love these socks and their angled stripes but if you go the body-suit route I WILL worry. xoxo Kay
Cara, The sock are just awesome. I too love the pattern and the yarn. I hope you don’t come up short. Fingers crossed for ya ; )
I do not believe I have ever seen a nicer pair of socks. Yowza.
