Feet get cold in Fall.
January One rocks socks.
Play to win YOUR pair!
Heh heh heh. I think I’ve out done myself with this one. Here it goes:
l to r: Lisa Souza SOCK! Merino in Peacock, Interlacements Toasty Toes color 409, Ellen’s Half Pint Farm Merino/Nylon Sock Yarn, Three Waters Farm Superwash Merino in Aunt Maude’s Mauve, Spirit Trail Fiberworks Sock Yarn Merino/Nylon, and Lisa Souza SOCK! Merino in Jonquil.
How to win: WRITE A HAIKU. But not just any haiku. YOU MUST USE AT LEAST THREE OF THE FOLLOWING WORDS IN YOUR HAIKU: january, one, rock(s), jet, fall, sheep, wool, feet (or foot), knit, yarn, pirate, fest, dude, fantastic, worm (that is WORM. With an O. My 5.5 yr old nephew gave me that one.) AND EVERY HAIKU MUST USE THE WORD SOCK. (So that means FOUR REQUIRED WORDS.)
Need to know HOW to write a Haiku? Check here and here.
ONE ENTRY PER PERSON. LEAVE YOUR HAIKU IN THE COMMENTS. COMMENTS WILL CLOSE SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30th 23rd at 11:59 EDT. Winner will be announced sometime the following week.
There will be six winners. FOUR will be chosen at random from the entire group of entrants. TWO will be chosen by me – one because I think it’s the best, most creative Haiku, and one because it makes Ann and I laugh for like a half an hour straight and we have to call each other a million times to laugh about it some more and then I tell my sister about it and we laugh our asses off and basically my day is made because you wrote a haiku. That one DEFINITELY wins. Each winner will receive one of the above sock yarns – enough yarn for a pair of socks – and an orange chibi. And maybe some candy for Halloween. If I’m feeling good that day.
Remember, you’ve got to be in it to win it! PLAY BALL!
PS – You guys are all nuts. I LOVE IT!!!!!
Cold January,
Wool rescues and comforts with
Its socks. Sigh. Warm feet.
Delurking to enter:
Without their wool socks
The sheep will fall down the rock
Perhaps, on pirates…
And now we see why I stuck with engineering 🙂
wool knit into socks
a pirate can only say
Arrrr! that’s fantastic
Doing the whole 5-7-5-7-7 (though I separated it so you could consider just the first “standard” 5-7-5 for your contest)…
January snow
On wool feet does softly tread
One sock falling down
Laughter tinkles through the air
Sheep born yarn knit up with care
Sometimes Fall sneaks in
As we knit tank tops…
Make socks not war, dude!
unrelated- yet important ideas 😉
that was fun.
thanks,cara!

I used SOCK!! lol
Oh crap, I didn’t use “sock.” Too many rules. Let me adjust:
The pirate dude knits
Not socks for his chilly feet
But to warm his worm.
Stitch by stitch, wool turns
softly to socks. Outside, one
leaf falls, then another.
Dude buys me some yarn
Hopes to get me in the sack

Worm socks are so long.
I cannot just jet through them,
I knit and knit. Dude.
Here’s my haiku:
dude, wool yarn winding
’round my needles like a worm
making socks…it rocks!
I just had to get the word “worm” in there, in honor of your nephew. That, and “dude”, because my friends tease me about how often I start my sentences with that particular word.
With no sheep on board
Even pirates need warm socks
In January

My haiku, dedicated to all the lone socks with no mate, victims of Second Sock Syndrom!
(Will be dreaming of the yarn!)
Over my McCann’s oatmeal (dry roasted in the pressure cooker, steamed to perfection in 8 minutes and mixed with raspberry jam before being splashed with milk) I figured out how to make my original entry work:
January One,
A worm in your corn chowder?
No so(ck) fantastic.
I’ve been chuckling all morning at Sarah Janet’s “lucky bastard worms” and thinking of Lowly (Cf. R. Scarry).
Totally not funny but I used the “perception of a moment” part of the haiku from haikuworld.
January one
Fantastic knee socks that rock
Fall wool keeps feet warm
Too funny!
Knitting wool socks,
I’m in a trance, can’t stop!
Fantastic socks rock!

Going for that abstract haiku feeling…
Fun contest!
I second the Rhinebeck readings. If only I could be there! Here’s my submission with optional Tanka ending (5-7-5-7-7):
torpid worm in sleep
dreams of sock and shirt clad one
mad feet treadling
a hunger she can’t resist
she plies it all night for love
tangled yarn.

January.
Feet lust for warmth
Dream of wool socks
I want worms of wool

Here’s my attempt – not the funniest, but an appropriate reminder for me today as I was stupid enough to wander around in sandals during a cold rain:
Sock yarn may be wool
If so, warm feet you will have
A good thing in fall
Jet black pirate sheep
Knit socks of their wool in Fall

I love your site–the changing photo each time I come back. Did you design it? Take the photos? It is awesome. Are you, Chris, and co. on the same server? provided? (i.e., blogger)?
Wow! This is so much fun! I wish I had the time to read through all the entries, but perhaps it’s better that I don’t. The few I read are great! Totally would hsve scared me off… Anyway, here goes!
Toes worm through worn socks.
Darning-fest to breathe new life?
Dude, I’ll knit some more…
Can’t wait to read the winners!
Woah. Crazy layout! When HTML goes wrong…
Holy crap, y’all are insane. But, can I resist? NOPE.
The knitter smiled.

I told that one dude
I’d knit a sock for his worm.
“Fantastic!”, he thought.
I swear I wrote this before I read any of the entries, and realized I wasn’t the only clever one to use worm in… that way.
For context, my haiku was inspired by a recent incident, in which a misogynist troll posted in a Flickr knitting group, hitting on the female knitters, and asking what we’d make for him. I suggested a (scratchy) mohair willie warmer. He missed the sarcasm and implied rays of pain and death shooting from my eyes, and seemed enthusiastic about the idea.

Erin
Okay, so yes, I lurk, but I don’t want to be the 29th person to say “Awesome socks!” Anyhow, just disqualify me, I’m only in this for the sake of writing haiku, which I *adore* doing. So, multiple poems from me:
Janury yarn
sheep shorn for a piratefoot
wool socks rock my fall
Yarnfest is here, dude
one fantastic knit sock will
fit a jet or worm
Rocks are hard to knit
my fingers all have blisters
I should stick to socks
and finally, trying a 3-5-3, based on one of your lovely haiku links:
Knit, worm, knit!
Pirates need wool socks.
Scurvy sheep.
And while I’m here, I should mention that the picture of the evergreens covered in snow, which came up recently in your header, literally took my breath away. And yes, like The Harlot, I’ve been known to simply reload your page over and over to marvel at the photographs.
delurking for this one.. Hopefully multiple entries are allowed.

冷秋のフィートのための足袋は素敵
It’s an anatomically correct japanese haiku with 17 syllables. It doesn’t translate into 17 in English though, but here’s what it means:
socks for my cold fall feet would be fantastic
Ok, this I’ve got to try even though I may be late.

Sock on feet,
Worm around in toasty knit.
