UPDATE!!!
Well, they certainly didn’t learn it from one in three of their peers, but the kids in Blue Valley are sticking up for themselves! Thanks, Andrea, for the link!
Uh oh.
Pretty terrifying, and one more reason the state of Kansas has such a miserable reputation.
I love the warning you get when you try to view passages from the titles they want to ban”
Warning
Some of the material in these assigned school books is extremely controversial and many people consider it objectionable or inappropriate for children. The content you are about to view contains adult material that may not be appropriate for all users. Before viewing this page you must read and agree to the following:
1. You are an adult (18 years or older) and have read and understand this warning.
2. You understand that the material may involve language, content and themes of an adult, objectionable or controversial nature.
3. IN NO EVENT WILL ClassKC.org BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY DAMAGES OF ANY KIND resulting from viewing or any other use of this material.
Yes, I want to sue the bastards for exposing me to themes of an ADULT nature. God, those poor kids. Now when Uncle Jim Bob crawls into their bed, they’ll think they are the only one in the world that ever happened to …
Oh god Kerstin. I didn’t even read that far! What kind of damages can I expect – an orgasm maybe? A stirring in the loins? Will I grow another head? (Because, you know, I’ve already got two – from all that premarital sex.)
All I can muster the energy to do is grunt with disgust.
I was going to comment here, but ended up writing a whole long mini-essay blithering response to this, so I saved you the space and posted to my website:

Yeah.
hey, i just found out that the students at blue valley high school, where they’re fighting over this whole banning books insanity, set up a website to counter the classickc website. it’s at http://www.freewebs.com/studentsspeakout.
so far nothing much seems to be happening there, but hopefully it’ll pick up soon…
Oh, thanks for that update.
For whatever it’s worth, the list of proposed alternatives actually has the better books. I’m not down with bans, but c’mon: “Moby Dick” has “One Flew Over the Coocoo’s Nest” beat five ways.
