Don’t be such a heel!

Thank you all so much for your sock heel suggestions. I’ve had a lot to think over in terms of these new-to-me toe-up socks. This is what they looked like this morning:

Please excuse my weird looking ankle. It’s usually got a lot more shape than that. Funny angle probably.

And this is what the sock looks like now:

I’m going to take a bit of La‘s advice in the comments yesterday and go in a different direction. I’m so thrilled with my toe up toe – why not try the traditional toe up heel, no? Trust me if it works, I’ll be asking for this recipe.

What’d ya think? Maybe a wrap for lunch? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I crack myself up.

PS – Happy Birthday Sandy!

  1. Ya, those toe ups suck when it comes to figuring out where to put the heel. Once you find the magic formula you’ll have it…kinna like the knee high formula. You might get Simple Socks by PGR as she has a great short row heel and Sensational Socks has a good one, too.

  2. I would personally go with a regular old short row heel. Unless they aren’t comfortable on you or something. I have only tried the Sherman heel and double-wrapped heel. I don’t have a strong preference, but I think I do like the wrapped heel a little better (I like Wendy’s instructions for it, too.) I’ve had a steep learning curve to figure out how to avoid holes at the edge of the heel, but I’m sure you’ll figure that out faster than I did.

I haven’t had the guts to try the short row heels yet, but I have now knit several toe up socks using the “Afterthought Heel” and it is so darn easy I cant imagine bothering to learn anything else! I love not having to stop and think about turning or gussets or heel flaps or any of that nonsense.
I do my socks two at a time on two circulars and also like the way that both heels can be worked at the same time!
This link has a good description of how these heels are done. http://www.socknitters.com/lessons/afterthoughtheels.htm

  4. I have just finished the heels on my toe-up socks and you can see them on my blog. The formula is pretty simple and if you want, I can email it to you in detail.

  5. good luck with that heel cara!

  6. Finally, someone listens to my ramblings! I’m so glad I was able to save you from throwing your needles out the window!

  7. You may want to try these as an alternative to the short-row heel. Jen swears by them. I haven’t tried them yet, but will be in the near future.

  8. Oooh, such pretty yarn! Is it STR?

  9. I think I had the same problem on my first go-round. I undid it and once it was right, I could use it to estimate the next one. Course, I haven’t finished the pair yet, but that has more to do with the lace that I can’t memorize than the heel…

  10. I love the way the socks are working up!
And lovely yarn in the enry before, Spunky/boogie does excellent fibers and beauttiful colors.

  11. just curious, what is the ridge near the toe of your sock? i saw it in the last post as well. i haven’t knit too many socks, but i don’t think i’ve ever seen a ridge on a pair…
    do tell!
    🙂

  12. I use Wendy knits’ toe up pattern, with the short row heel. I had to rip the first time too, and add half an inch of knitting before the heel, just to make sure! Good luck! I really love toe-up.

  13. My toe up sock heels have heel turns that sit under the heel just like cuff down socks!
