I’ve been in a wicked funk the last week (no biggie – it happens – it’s on the way out) so I’ve been concentrating on Vicki‘s tag.
Ten of My Favorite Things
1. Georgie’s hands on my back before we fall asleep at night. It helps him, and it helps me.
2. Max, Charlotte and Elijah Lew.
3. Any song or book or movie or tv show that elicits a STRONG reaction – whether it be tears or laughter or tugs at my heart. I’m all for emotion. Even when it hurts. Means your alive.
4. Georgie and I in the car, singing at the top of our lungs, stereo blasting, laughing our heads off.
5. It’s rare to find a beach I couldn’t be happy on. The surf has an incredibly calming effect.
6. My home. Especially when Georgie’s home with me. Just knowing he’s in the house.
7. Being completely engaged so that time stops and speeds up together. Whether I’m taking pictures or knitting or writing. Especially writing. There’s not much better than coming out of being in the zone and finding you’ve got five pages in front of you that you don’t remember writing. I get it when I’m shooting kids and flowers too – but not always. And you certainly don’t always get it when you’re writing. But the rare times you do – WOW!
8. The friendship I have with my sister. I can tell her anything – no judgments. And she knows my whole history (well, there were 18 months when she wasn’t around 😉 ).
9. Kisses and hugs. Lots and lots of kisses and hugs.
10. Knowing that the love of my life thinks I’m the love of his life.
Georgie and I had a good weekend together. I had a good cry and he listened and helped me and I’m feeling a lot better. Can you tell? 😉
Oh and number 11! Knit One Read Too. We now have over 150 members – can you believe it? And our third discussion starts today – so head on over and be a part of it.
Who am I going to tag? Let’s see. How about Annie, Lolly and Wendy (where’ve you been girl?)!
Harlots Everywhere!
I’m happy to annouce that Cari from Iowa has won a signed copy of the Harlot’s Book! Cari, email me your address and I’ll get it out into the mail. Thanks for playing everybody!
More Maryland Meet-ups
Joy and I have been talking after our serendipitious meeting Thursday night. It seems she and Kaitlyn are putting together a Friday night bash at the Wharf Rat in Baltimore! Click on the Jack Daniel’s bottle on Kaitlyn’s blog for the evite and all the details. Thanks for planning this girls!
Opinions Please!
This is the border I have going so far. (Doesn’t it look like a sad kitty cat? Not liking that by the way!) One thing I’ve learned in the experiment called BORDER THAT’S SLOWLY KILLING ME! is that binding off and picking up the stitches gives a MUCH nicer border than attaching it by doing a k2tog at the edge. Now, this is the border (sort of) I had in mind. Georgie likes it – thinks it looks like the sun. Me, I’m torn. I think a simpler border might be better – this might pull away too much from the loveliness that is the pinwheel. I’ve looked through Nicky Epstein’s Knitting on the Edge about 452 times and can’t find what I want. (In looking for a link, I see she’s got another edge book coming out. Maybe I should wait for that. The kid won’t know any different. NO! I want this FINISHED!) Any and all suggestions (and opinions on what I’ve got here) would be greatly appreciated!
Have a great Monday!
It does look like a sad kitty!
While I don’t have a great suggestion, I would probably:
1)Opt for a border that is done in stockinette. The change to garter is abrupt and draws attention away from the nice swoopy lines of the pinwheel.
2)Look for a border that would echo the lines of the pinwheel either by continuing it, or by swirling in the opposite direction.
Good luck and have fun experimenting.
Isn’t all this connecting that the Harlot fostered fantastic? It’s like she comes to your town and brings all the bloggers together.
i think a simpler border might work too. the pinwheel is so cool. i like the opposite swirl idea…
the surf — that is the BEST. i love the beach as well, in any weather.
we’re sending lots of kisses and hugs!
Wait, that border – is it going to keep on like that, like a dinasour neck? and not be connected between the points?
I love the blanket so much – it is pretty and swirly, and the edge as it is just doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t know what else to suggest -something in a lace pattern that reflects the curves? Garter Stitch broken up with regular YO increases?
I don’t know, just something more fluid.
Like that helps! Sorry.
Hmm, I’m torn on the border you have. It’s interesting, but (in my opinion) maybe not right…? It’s hard to think what would be right. I second the commenters above, though, that the garter stitch is an abrupt change, and it all seems to take away from the swirl.
The beach is so fantastic — calming and somehow watching the surf seems to put things into perspective.
I also think a simple border for the pinwheel — how about a crocheted edge to show of the coolness of the pinwheel.
I love that list. That is an awesome list. I think I’m going to have to bookmark it and come back to it every time I need a warm fuzzy.
I’m making the same blankie and have been hunting for edgings too. I read somewhere that Barbara Walker’s second stitch treasury has lots of edge stitches. I have #1, but haven’t seen #2 in person, but I’m on the hunt for it!
Iowa? I’m not in Iowa! Ohh… right. I almost never come across a Cari who spells her name like mine. They’re all Carrie’s out there, for the most part.
Simple border. Definitely.
I like the idea of a simpler border; I agree that the points distract from the pinwheel-ness. But, since I can’t think of a good border, maybe I’m not properly visualizing the full points!
I, too, love the list you made. Number One on the list, particularly, because we do the same thing, Spiff and I. And the world suddenly becomes alright, even if it’s been deeply wrong all day long.
And I love that “in the zone” description of what it’s like to create something, be it in knitting or in writing. Surfacing from that to discover you’ve created something you really like…it’s such a weird and wonderful feeling.
I second (or third, or…) the idea that the garter stitch is jarring against the pinwheel, and an edging that continues the swirl effect would be a great idea. You could continue in pinwheel mode but inject a bit of a lace pattern into the mix as you go.
Have fun, and hooray for Georgie 🙂
Now that I see a pic, I agree, the triangles take away from the pinwheel…it needs to either be swoopy and follow the pinwheel lines or just a simple finish of some sort.
Love your list, C. Whenever you talk of G, I am reminded of how wonderful and special finding your one true love is. 🙂
Lots of hugs to you chica!
Jen
Hmmm, the triangle tips interrupt the pinwheel. How about continuing the pinwheels via the triangles–decreasing on only the one side. Are the triangles in garter?
Thanks for tagging me, C. I will write it up tonight 🙂 I loved reading yours!
